Luis Angel Vilella (born December 11, 1986), better known as L.A.V., is a Puerto Rican-American Bilingual Hip-Hop Artist emerging from The Bronx, NY. Although his music may be angry, comical, and controversial at times, there is no doubt that whatever he says in his lyrics comes out of the abundance of his heart. Starting out as a Gospel artist at the age of 14, L.A.V. developed a feel for onstage performance and studio recording. However, not having a say in his career at the time, he became uncomfortable with where he was going musically and chose to go a different route.
Seeing the hypocrisy within the church and his household gave him more of a reason to do so; especially when he was thrown out of his mother’s house, solely because of the fact that he wanted to do “secular music.” Not having anyone to turn to, the teenaged lyricist began to experiment with heavy drugs, landing him in a rehabilitation center before his eighteenth birthday.
Once out of rehabilitation, L.A.V. got back in touch with a few friends, who helped him get back on track musically. He recorded his first single, entitled: “Luv Me Knot.” Although the song quality was not “top-notch”, it gained enough recognition to open a few doors and land him a handful of performances. This led him to meet other up and coming artists and producers who became interested enough for collaborations and guest appearances on several underground English and Spanish mix-tapes within New York and Puerto Rico.
He currently is featured on JR Da Future’s “Dark Liquor on a Sunny Day” album, which received rave reviews on the Checkmate New York section column of the July/August issue of XXL Magazine. L.A.V. has recently been grinding very hard and has made appearances in GS Radio’s Unsigned Hype showcase, the Burn U Movement showcase where he won a media package for his gritty performance of his recently released on itunes single “Bad Mutha Fucka” that was produced by Lord Phat.
He has also been interviewed by Debra “Coco” Slater on the Just Gimme The Mic radio show, as well as by Rah Grizzly and Kev E. Serious on 15 Minutes of Fame Radio, and is going to be featured on DJ Ill Will’s “I Warned U” mixtape that is scheduled to be released in early 2013.
L.A.V.’s buzz is crazy right now, and he is drawing comparisons to Eminem because of his ability as a gifted lyricist, and the sound of his voice. He recognizes that could be both a gift and a curse, but is embracing those accolades because he knows that every successful aspiring artist has been compared to other established artists at some point in their career.
Lastly, L.A.V. is working on the release of three videos, a mixtape, and an album, so keep your ears to the streets because he’s coming!!!!
