Danica Patrick’s No. 1 starting spot in the Daytona 500 is about as fragile as the glass trophy given to the pole winner. As long as she makes it through today’s Budweiser Duel (2 p.m. ET, Speed) — two 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for Sunday’s 500 — Patrick will retain her coveted spot. But if she crashes and a backup car is needed, Patrick will be the pole-sitter in name only; she’ll have to start the race from the back of the field instead of the front.
