This past Wednesday, November 13th, I had the pleasure of attending Maria Davis’ MAD Wednesday at Shrine, her monthly showcase featuring up-and-coming talent from all over the country. She was also celebrating her birthday that very night so there were several legends in the music industry who came through to show love to the legendary HIV/ AIDS advocate, who’s featured on Jay-Z‘s “Reasonable Doubt” album. Davis found out she was infected in 1995 and shifted gears from music promotor to activist. Her role is similar in both capacities…giving a voice to the voiceless.
Kool DJ Red Alert, Dana Dane, Mike Hatch, Darryl James, and Sheri Sher, among several other groundbreaking music icons, were there to show love to Maria. This has been a big year for Maria, from introducing Janet Jackson as she was honored by amfAR this past February and her most recent appearance on the hit reality show, Black Ink Crew, getting a red ribbon tattoo in honor of her HIV/ AIDS activism and opening up the dialogue about safe sex.
Maria has paved the way for so many of the voiceless living with HIV/ AIDS and shown a vibrant and fulfilling life is more than possible while battling the virus. I’ve had the honor of doing AIDS Walk NY with Maria for the last two years and I can tell you that she doesn’t miss a beat. She is a true survivor and is living her life with true purpose and generosity. Happy birthday, Maria Davis!
