This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of performing at Sunday Evening Serenade, a monthly soul music event held in the city by Olivia Gilmore and hosted by Ron Faison. It was a networking mixer that combined live entertainment. The room was stirring with talented people from various entertainment outlets and soul music supporters. As I walked out to my car with my musicians, we bumped into Elle Varner, who was parked directly in front of me. Fans of her music, we stopped to chat for a few minutes. My guitar player had actually auditioned for her before, but hadn’t gotten a call back. She was just coming from a female empowerment dinner that she had hosted. It was a private dinner attended by some of Elle’s favorite women, including Bridget Kelly, Sonyae Elise, Nema Kemar, and Samantha Black. The talented singer, noted for her song with J. Cole, “Only Wanna Give It To You,” was enthusiastic about her dinner as we chatted, She was really charged up about how inspired she was after such an awesome night with such wonderful women. Our conversation got me thinking how amazing all the women that I met that night were. When it comes down, John Legend‘s right…”We’re just ordinary people.” We’re ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
