Yesterday the hip hop world was stunned at the news that the “Voice of New York” Angie Martinez abruptly resigned from Hot 97 out of the blue, Angie spent almost 25 years with the station and was known for her classic interviews with many of the top artists and power players within the hip hop world. She officially announced the move on her instagram Wednesday:
In the caption she wrote:
“Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show ❤️ stay tuned…. Love, Angie”
Her last show on Hot 97 was Wednesday afternoon and it was a tearful warm show and she thanked her long list of co-workers and everybody who has helped her while at the station.
In an even more shocking turn of events today it was announced that Angie will be joining Hot 97’s rival stating Power 105.1, these two stations have been bitter rivals since its inception in 2002. Today Clear Channel released a statement confirming what we all knew:
“Angie is the Queen of New York City radio she is an incredible talent who continues to blaze trails and we are excited to have her join the team at Power 105.1 and The Beat in Miami,” wrote Thea Mitchem, Clear Channel’s Senior Vice President of Programming of Major Markets, in a press release.
Martinez will replace 105.1’s DJ Prostyle on weekday afternoons. He’ll move to midday, hosting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
